Registration Edition

News from The Advising Team!

Hello MSW Students!

We know that you are on Spring Break – hope this finds you relaxed, or at least finding a little peace for the week without classes. We wanted to share some VERY important information with you regarding registration. Please read carefully and thoroughly. As always, if you have questions, please connect with your Advisor (contact information listed below).

The University has been making some changes to the registration timeframes, and the School of Social Work has been working diligently to determine how to manage these – while keeping things running smoothly for our students. Below is what we determined to assist you in making sure you are staying on track for graduation!

SUMMER 2023

As you know, the University already opened registration for Summer 2023.

However, due to the School of SW’s admissions process/timeframe, the need to finalize course offerings, etc., we opted to move the first day of registration for MSW students to April 15.

Therefore:

If you are interested in taking a class outside of the School of SW (elective), you are welcome to enroll in that now.

For all required and elective courses within the School of SW, you can do so starting 4/15.

For 400 level courses, please complete the override form

on or after this date. Any submissions prior will NOT be processed. You will be enrolled on a first come (submitted), first served basis. Please keep checking your student record to see if you are given a seat in the class, and/or if you need to enroll in something else.

Remember – the waitlists are not active, and not utilized. Please do not put your name on the waitlist with the expectation of a seat if/when it comes available.

FALL 2023

Enrollment by appointment for Fall 2023 starts on March 13.

In checking student records, it appears that most (if not all) MSW students will be able to enroll starting 3/15. You can check your appointment date in SIS (Link to SIS).

It will be on the right, bottom corner of the home page in your record.

A few things to know about Fall enrollment:

Your enrollment appointment does NOT mean that you need to make an appointment with your Advisor to enroll in courses. This only lets you know when you will be allowed to start to self-enroll.

In order to allow for equitable enrollment for the 2023 cohorts, as well as current students,

HALF of the seats for each course will open (starting 3/13). The other half of the seats will open on 4/15.

Please do NOT put in an override request form for 800 level courses (electives or required). If you do not get enrolled in those courses before it is filled, plan to self-enroll starting on 4/15.

Remember, you are guaranteed a seat in the required courses per the program option curriculum - https://socialwork.msu.edu/programs/BASW/curriculum.html If there are multiple sections assigned to your program option, these are on a first come, first served basis.

All electives are on a first come, first served basis.

The School of Social Work is planning to have the “current courses” lists (for Summer and Fall) posted soon

These will include all required courses (by program option and cohort), as well as electives offered within the School of SW. Reviewing these are the best way to secure that you are in the correct sections of courses, and that you are enrolled in everything as needed each semester.

Please check in with your fellow classmates to make sure they know this information.
